What is Saliva Testing?
In the past few years research has shown that saliva can be used as a diagnostic tool to measure the unbound, biologically-active fraction of steroid hormones in the bloodstream. Steroid hormones not bound by carrier proteins freely diffuse into saliva. Most steroid hormones in the blood are bound tightly to carriers making them unavailable to target tissues. Steroids are small molecules that when released from the binding proteins and red blood cells in the blood, freely diffuse into tissues which include the salivary gland. Those most studied are estrogens, progesterone, DHEA, testosterone and cortisol to evaluate adrenal function.
Saliva measures the free biologically available fraction of the steroid hormones that have moved out of the bloodstream and into the tissue. Both blood and urine measure total levels, both bound and unbound which may mask a deficiency or excess.
Saliva testing may help providers determine hidden hormone imbalances associated with patient symptoms and aid the provider in treatment options that can be individualized for each patient.
